Now more than ever, customers want a vehicle that can empower their on-the-go lifestyle while keeping them connected where it counts—and the 2022 Kia EV6 measures up. This all-new CUV shatters preconceptions of electric mobility with not only its available 310-mile range* and 18-minute 10% to 80% charge time, but with its mobile power source: the available Onboard Power Generator.
The Onboard Power Generator with Utility Mode, standard on EV6 Wind and GT-Line, utilizes the vehicle’s available 77.4 kWh lithium-ion polymer battery to provide up to 1,900 watts of power to devices and electronics inside and outside the vehicle. With Utility Mode engaged, the EV6’s standard electronics can also be powered by the generator, allowing for extended use of the cabin lights or audio system while parked without draining the 12V auxiliary battery.
In the event of a home power outage, the Onboard Generator can even power household appliances, such as a microwave or portable heater. And, from a full charge, power can be drawn from the vehicle for up to 36 consecutive hours, helping keep customers comfortable until power is restored.
Customers who work from a mobile office or frequently enjoy camping or tailgating will be excited to take advantage of this convenient, portable electricity supply, so be sure you are ready to explain it to them.
EV6’s available Onboard Power Generator offers both interior and exterior access points. Ensuring your customers understand how to access both connection ports will help them get the most out of this adventure-enabling feature.
Keeping Connected Inside
The interior connection port for the Onboard Power Generator can be found near the center bottom of the rear seats. This port can power 120V electronics inside the vehicle, such as a tablet, laptop, or portable gaming system.
Switch the “EV” button on the front, left side of the center console into the “On” position.
Insert the mechanical key into the keyhole of the Onboard Power Generator port near the bottom of the rear seat and turn the key counterclockwise to unlock and open the receptacle.
Plug the electronic device into the receptacle. When finished, unplug the device, and lock the port door.
Accessing Exterior Power
The exterior connection is accessed through the EV6’s standard charge port and requires the Onboard Power Generator connector, which comes standard with the feature. Once set up, this port can power electronic items outside of the vehicle, like a portable air conditioner, electric camping stove, or portable TV.
Open the charge port door on the vehicle and plug the Onboard Power Generator connector into the charging port.
Press the switch on the rear of the Onboard Power Generator connector and verify the light on top of the connector illuminates, indicating the Onboard Power Generator is active.
If the light does not illuminate, there is an error, such as the battery being too low.
Turn off the Onboard Power Generator by pressing the switch on the rear of the Onboard Power Generator connector and unplug it from the charging port.
Protecting Vehicle Range*: Setting the Battery Discharge Limit
Because the Onboard Power Generator uses EV6’s lithium-ion battery to function, EV6 customers should be aware that extended use of the generator may affect the vehicle’s charge level, and—subsequently—the remaining All Electric Range* (AER). Luckily, drivers can use the Battery Discharge Limit to help conserve range* for the next leg of their journey.
The Battery Discharge Limit helps preserve the battery’s range* by cutting off power to the Onboard Power Generator when a certain State of Charge (SoC) is reached. This limit can be set via the infotainment section of the EV6’s standard dual-panoramic curved display by selecting “EV” and then “Onboard Power Generator”. The driver can then set their preferred discharge limit.
NOTE: If the Battery Discharge Limit is NOT set by the driver, the Onboard Power Generator will
automatically be disabled when the battery reaches 20% State of Charge. Encourage your customer
to set their own Discharge Limit to help prevent potential frustration with this feature.
