EV Quick Tip #5

ELECTRIC VEHICLES

The first question many customers have about electric vehicles (EVs) is, “How can I charge it?” When you are familiar with all the options, you can help customers understand how easy and convenient charging can be!

TYPES OF CHARGING

There are three types of charging for EVs: Level 1 Charging*, Level 2 Charging*, and DC Fast Charging*.

LEVEL 1 CHARGING* (TRICKLE CHARGE)

This is alternating current (AC) charging that uses a 120-volt, 12-amp power source. Customers simply plug the EV into a standard household outlet (it should be a dedicated outlet and must be grounded).

This method requires the longest charging time and is not recommended as the main source of charging. Please note that extension cords should never be used with the Level 1 Charging* cable.

LEVEL 2 CHARGING*

This is also AC charging, but it uses a 240-volt power source — similar to the electrical connection for a household air conditioner or dryer. The amperage varies: the higher the amperage, the faster the charge.

Most public charging stations are Level 2 Charging*. If possible, we recommend that customers install a home charging station, which makes Level 2 Charging* available right at home (with a 240-volt/32-amp to 40-amp power source).

DC FAST CHARGING* (HIGH-SPEED QUICK CHARGING)

This involves charging via Direct Current — or DC — with a 480- to 800- volt outlet. Customers can only access DC Fast Charging* at commercial sites, such as some public charging stations and some EV dealers. The charging times are much faster than Level 1 Charging* or Level 2 Charging*.

Despite the rapid charge rate, it is not recommended for any EV to charge solely with a DC Fast charger because consistent DC Fast Charging* may decrease the health/life of the high-voltage battery.

CHARGING TIME

Charging time depends on the capacity of the high-voltage battery and the percentage of existing charge it contains. The condition and durability of the high-voltage battery, charger specifications, and ambient temperature can also affect the time required for charging it.

Charging Time

Approximately 60 hours from zero charge to full for an EV with a 64-kWh battery

Approximate Driving Range* Added

Approximately 5 miles of range for each hour it is plugged in

Charging Time

With a 40-amp source, it takes about 9.5 hours to recharge an EV with a 64-kWh battery

Approximate Driving Range* Added

Approximately 15-25 miles of range for each hour it is plugged in

Charging Time

0 to 80% charged in just 60 minutes with 100 kW/200-amp/480-volt charger or 75 minutes with 50 kW/100-amp/480-volt charger

Approximate Driving Range* Added

Approximately 50 miles for every 15 minutes it is plugged in

HOME CHARGING

Plug In America estimates that 85% of EV charging takes place at home or at work.1

In addition to the convenience, customers may also benefit from special Time-of-Use pricing plans that have lower pricing periods throughout the week (e.g., “off-peak” hours).

If customers live in an apartment or condo, they should check with their landlord or Homeowners Association to determine the availability of chargers and the regulations regarding installation.

Customers will need to contact a licensed electrician to install a Level 2 Charging* station at their home. They will discuss the type and speed of the charger and the best location for it. Installation prices vary. In some cases, rebates can help offset installation costs.

PUBLIC CHARGING

Public charging stations may offer Level 2 Charging* and/or DC Fast Charging*. They are typically located in supermarket parking lots, city garages, gas stations, along highways, and many other locations across the country.

They are often part of a charging network; some stations are free, and others require a fee or membership. To use a network, your customer must register for it. They may want to sign up for several to ensure they are never too far from an in-network charging station. ChargePoint®, Electrify America and EVgoTM* are networks with thousands of charging stations.

Be sure to show customers how to find public and in-network charging stations in several ways:

  • Search for them using the Kia Access with UVO link* app, or with the vehicle’s touch screen when equipped with UVO.
  • Type “EV charging stations” into Google MapsTM* to generate an easy-to-access map of brand-name charging stations.
  • Use a mobile app such as PlugShare®*, which has a database of more than 30,000 charging stations in the U.S. and Canada. The in-network charging stations mentioned previously also have apps that provide location services.

*Safety Information and Legal Disclaimers

Driving while distracted can result in a loss of vehicle control that may lead to an accident, severe bodily harm, and death. The driver’s primary responsibility is in the safe and legal operation of a vehicle, and the use of any handheld devices, other equipment, or vehicle systems, including steering wheel mounted controls, which take the driver’s eyes, attention, and focus away from the safe operation of a vehicle or which are not permissible by law should never be used during operation of the vehicle.
